Once people start to know what their rights are, they can’t “un-learn” that info. When people are at camp and tired and stressed, they will remember they have rights!
This is a great and easy action. Just pick one of our videos on TikTok, like, follow, comment, repost and/or forward it around. This will help it show up in all your friend's feeds.
If you do this we would definitely suggest that you do not do it solo. A large group of people all speaking up together is the best. Speaking up publicly is the best because then everyone else will hear and know.
When all the staff know, the power transfers to you and away from the employer. You can speak up during precamp OR wait til during the summer.
Things you need to know if you do this; it’s illegal for an employer to fire you or threaten you or take any retribution against you for asking about or taking the time owed to you.
Make sure you know possible tactics they may use to discourage you first so you can be prepared!
You can inform the employer that you will be taking the time off you are owed on X day. It is their obligation to ensure they have coverage.
The minimum time off is your right. Again, recommend doing this as a group. Safety in numbers!
You can file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour and they will investigate the employer.
You can file a complaint for up to two years after you were employed. If the employer broke the law (e.g. not giving you the minimum time off, withholding pay, firing you to get back at you for something) then the employer will need to pay a fine, pay you back etc: https://www.apps.labour.gov.on.ca/eclaim/
There is an organization called Worker’s Action Centre: they have a Workers’ Rights Hotline and can also help 416-531-0778 |
toll-free 1-855-531-0778 | www.workersactioncentre.org
Tell your parents, your friends parents and parents of your campers that you aren't getting the minimum amount of time off. Social pressure is very effective and no camp wants the reputation that they mistreat their employees.
