Don't be fooled by tactics Camps may use!

Threaten You

Embarrass You

Threaten You

They may directly or indirectly threaten you (e.g. that you will be fired, that something bad will happen to you or your friends etc.) Remember - threats and retribution are illegal!

Guilt You

Embarrass You

Threaten You

They may try to make you feel guilty for asking about your rights, insist that they don't have the money or resources to give you your rights.

Know that many camps have simply not planned adequately or prioritized staff rights and instead invested their time, energy, resources into other things.

Remember that EVERY employer in Ontario is expected to honour employee's rights and it can't just be when it's convenient for them to do so!

Embarrass You

Embarrass You

Embarrass You

They may instead point to how you show up as a staff and try turn the tables ("If you were a good staff, this wouldn't happen" or "instead let's talk about what YOU do wrong"). This is a distraction. If there is a performance issue, camps need to address this in a timely manner. It is illegal to withhold minimum time off as a consequence for any perceived performance issues.

Bribe You

Get you alone

Embarrass You

They may try to convince you to forget about the minimum time off by offering you other things instead e.g. free pizza, extra money etc. Remember - you can say yes to those things and you would STILL be entitled to receive the minimum time off!!

Gaslight You

Get you alone

Get you alone

They may try to convince you that you are wrong, that you don't understand the way the rules apply, that you are weak and can't cut it etc. None of these are appropriate. Don't get distracted. Your rights are your rights. You understand them and you are entitled to them.

Get you alone

Get you alone

Get you alone

They may try to get you to talk to them 1:1. The goal here is to make you doubt yourself and feel insecure. This also opens you up to a "he said/she said." Only talk to management about your rights as a group. You are much more protected that way.
